Please find the scenario below that best describes your situation:
I think my sump pump has failed; water seems to be coming out of the sump pit.
- Check the power supply to the pump; is the cord unplugged or the circuit breaker tripped?
- Locate your discharge pipe; if it has a shutoff valve, make sure that valve is open. Click Here to see pictures of shutoff valves if you're not sure what to look for.
- Is water leaking from the discharge pipe, or around the check valve? Click Here to see pictures of check valves if you're not sure what to look for.
- Is your sump pit sealed? If not, you can lift the cover to see where the water level is. If it's below the rim of the basin, then the water leak is likely from some other source.

- Do you know how old your sump pump is? The average lifespan for a sump pump is approximately 5-7 years. If your pump is this age or older, it may be time to consider a new one.
- Do you know what type of switch you have? Certain styles of switches, such as tethered floats or pressure diaphragm switches, are prone to premature failure.
- Does your laundry tub drain into the sump pit? In some cases, we have seen pumps and switches fail due to buildups of soap residue from laundry wastewater.
- Are there stones or other debris in the basin? Your sump pump is designed to pump only water – any debris could damage the pump.
- If you can lift the sump basin cover, check the water level. If it's near the top, it could indicate a problem.
